More than a century of educational excellence with an international outlook

Nuestra Historia - Colegio Alemán

Our history

Founded in 1912, the German School of Barranquilla is the oldest of the German schools in Colombia. Throughout its 113-year history, it has established itself as a leader in multilingual, intercultural, and high-quality education, recognized both locally and internationally. Below are the most significant milestones in our history:

1912
Early Years

A group of German citizens founded the German School Society (Deutscher Schulverein) with the goal of establishing a kindergarten for the children of German immigrants.

1913
Official Inauguration

The Imperial Minister, Dr. Kraker von Schwarzenfeldt, inaugurated the school with only nine children. A year later, the community grew to 13 students, including the first Colombians.

1915 – 1929
Early Locations and Expansion

The school changed locations on several occasions, adapting to its growing needs.

Relocation

1942 – 1943
WWII Closure
The school was closed by order of the Colombian government during World War II. In its place, "Colegio El Prado" was created, and German was removed from the curriculum.
1956 – 1957
Reopening

The school reopened at Quinta Holanda with 255 students and later moved back to the Bellavista building.

1961 – 1965
Relocation

The first stone was laid for the campus on Carrera 51B. In 1964 and 1965, the Kindergarten and school sections moved progressively.

1970 – 1984
Consolidation as a German School Abroad

New support conditions from the German government were established. Official German language exams resumed, and ties with the ZfA were strengthened.

Academic Excellence

The school achieved its best results to date in the ICFES and German language exams.

2002
